Engaging Bell Ringers for High School

Do you have fast-finishers? Ealry arrivers? I do! I think we all do! That is why I have created some engaging bell ringers for high school students. With these resources, I am sure to have all my pupils working at all times, and I can devote some extra time to those who need help. Below you will find my favorite bell ringers!

Figurative Language

Teaching figurative language is part of our ELA lessons. We usually explain, do some exercises and then expect our students to be able to identify the different literary devices in texts! That is quite a challenge!! Not everyone finds it easy to spot metaphors, puns, hyperboles or imagery in poems, stories, songs… That is why I have created several worksheets on for my students to practise. Have a look at some of them…

Vocabulary

We always teach vocabulary in one way or another. No matter the style you use, you can help your students review the words tackled or worked on in class by giving them games to work on their own. Check out the post on written vocabulary games to learn more about them!

Parts of Speech

Other engaging bell ringers or early finishers I’ve created for my students are activities on parts of speech. I give them an extract from a novel or story and they have to look for nouns, verbs, prepositions, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs. They are a nice way to keep your pupils busy while working in a relaxing worksheet. Have a look at the following free worksheet to see if you find it useful!

Showing Rather than Telling

Getting our students to show rather than to tell is hard! But it is also soooo important! Being able to use language effectively is essential. By giving them tools to be able to understand writers’ effect in their use of words, we are helping them develop a critical mind. Check out these handouts I’ve created to review this skill.
